The Business Process and IT Analysis project, conducted in 2016, identified database organization and security as area needing to be addressed. The purpose of this project is to provide recommendations and guidelines to implement current industry standard database organization and security strategies to enhance application development efforts and limit critical IDWR databases from being accessed/updated by inappropriate applications or personnel. The evaluation should include a detailed survey of all the Departments existing databases/interrelationships and security method(s) currently employed. A major concern, under the currently implemented security scheme, is the ability of individual users, outside of Information Technology Services (ITS) and the ITS developed applications, to update the Departments databases. Specifically, use of MS SQL Server Management Studio, Access, or other SQL based tools with current user credentials can update or delete, purposely or accidentally, information within the Departments databases. The completion of this task will require the contractor to develop an in depth understanding of the database interrelationships and database/application security currently implemented at IDWR and be a subject matter expert on current Microsoft SQL Server and application development security implementations to provide their recommended course of action to bring database organization and application security to current industry standards.
