The cloud architect has overall responsibility for all facets of architecting, designing, and supporting the VMware cloud infrastructure. The staffing level required for this role depends on the scale of the cloud infrastructure. For smaller deployments, this role might be one of several roles a particular individual is responsible for. Large deployments might require several individuals to fulfill this role, if the cloud architects responsibilities require specialization. For example, as the VMware cloud infrastructure becomes the predominant infrastructure for delivering all services to the business, cloud network architects, cloud storage architects, and even cloud security architects might all become core cloud architect roles within the Cloud Infrastructure Services team. In addition, the capabilities of the existing Cloud Infrastructure Services ecosystem can affect the specific responsibilities of the cloud architect role. The Cloud Architect may be required to multitask across many projects, supporting multiple business functions. They will seek commonalities between standard Cloud and ITaaS offerings and projects for efficiencies, and work to resolve inefficiencies from complex solutions. These solutions may be a combination of information technologies (compute, storage, networking, security), Cloud computing, SOA architecture, and service-based components. The Cloud Architect is also involved in defining and evolving overall IT architecture and standards that maximize the synergy, reuse and value of individual IT solutions and components over time. As with all members of the Cloud team, they will be focused on fostering the new culture of being service minded, consumer focused and on automation and standardization. They will embody the concept of delivering an end to end service to their customers." Responsibilities Research Responsible for the internal and external research into the major technical categories to deliver a Cloud-based reference architecture and solution. Synthesizes new technical advancements and assesses the short-term and long-term feasibility with corporate Cloud and service-based offerings. Leverages a variety of sources to accomplish this, including but not limited to: white papers, vendor product documentation, industry conferences, research firms (Gartner, IDC, etc.), and peer interaction. Conducts appropriate research to validate and integrate offerings into the IT ecosystem. Understands and designs agile frameworks to accommodate SOA and related components such as: PaaS, IaaS, SaaS, Public Cloud Architectures and Cloud integration technologies. Project/Program Involvement Routinely educates project teams on reference architecture and may, with supervision from the Cloud Infrastructure Service Owners, be responsible for go/no go decisions on technical elements. Understands established internal IT offerings and in-process projects and integrates these into reference architecture. Is called upon as a subject-matter expert when new projects are initiated. Communication / Collaboration Is responsible for executive-level and customer-facing communications regarding cloud architecture and frameworks. Responds to technical inquiries by IT and non-IT groups requiring information regarding cloud integration, security, scalability, and service-based delivery. Documents architecture standards and provides input to projects and business cases as needed.
