What I mean by that is the candidate can get to the point of the questions and not trying to dance around the questions and provide wrong answers after the dancing is done. Also candidate would need to be able to understand the concept of the questions and points communicated so ideas can be bounce back and forth to work as a team professionally. This is a must have skills because we have to work together with many different teams to triage issues and also with different business partners to understand their business requests. UNIX: Know how to search log files on UNIX servers where log files are spread out all over the UNIX servers. Candidates will be performing log searches using UNIX commands since we have so many logs files spread across many different app servers. To identify the logs needed for research and analysis related to the production issues arose. If they have this skills, that would mean they have done investigation of java apps on UNIX systems that went wrong. That is what we do on a daily basis. The app logs we look at are very cryptic and contain xmls, etc … so is not trivial. ORACLE: We need candidates who can perform queries of the database using sqls to find info and answers to help solve the problems. Most production issues would end up causing problems to the data in the database so we perform a lot of queries to find out what the impact and where. Most of the time to resolve production issues, we have to write plsql scripts to fix the data problems which are work around to fix issues. So we need hands on experience in sqls and plsql developers. JAVA: Since we are a troubleshooting group, the candidates must be highly analytical. The candidates sort thru information gathered from analysis to get to the root cause. Our group will never perform java coding change to fix the bugs found. That is the job of the development team. We provide the root cause analysis to development and business teams so they can fix the problems. Hands on experience of the java language and development of major j2ee apps with flavors of web services, queuing, hibernate, spring, etc … is what we are looking for. Admins: Candidates should be either green card, citizen, h1b with longer than 1 year left. Our group wont be able to sponsor nor provide letters to extend h1b. In person interviews be needed for all candidates that pass the screening interviews. Our group doesnt provide traveling expenses for candidates to come for the in person interviews. Must be willing to take calls after regular work hours to handle 24 * 7 on call support responsibility. Years of experience: This is not a guarantee but we seem to have better luck with someone who have 10 plus years of experience. With that said we did have someone who have 13+ years of experience but still was not a good fit for our team so hence is not a slam dunk thing.
