INTRODUCTION 1. Contractor shall provide The Graduate Center (“College”), a constituent Institute of The City University of New York (“University”), with Lead Developer services for the CUNY Academic Commons Project on an hourly basis (“Lead Developer”). 2. This is a requirements contract. The amount of Services needed by the College will be determined by the College and communicated to the Contractor at the appropriate time. College estimates that it will require a total of approximately seven hundred fifty (750) hours, but may request more or fewer hours based on Colleges needs and in Colleges best interests. 3. The College designates the Colleges CUNY Academic Commons Director or his/her designee (“Project Manager”) as the liaison between Contractor and the College for purposes of administration of the Contract. 4. The Graduate Center is an institution of higher education located at 365 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY. The loading dock is located at 16 East 35th Street. 5. We require contracted Lead Developer of Research Project services. The individual(s) providing such contracted services on a per-hour basis must have experience and expertise that are relevant to the applications we require to be maintained and enhanced. E. SCOPE OF WORK The Lead Developer is responsible for the following functions: 1. Development team management The CUNY Academic Commons project encompasses the https://commons.gc.cuny.edu network of websites – which includes the primary Commons social space as well as 3500+ secondary sites - in addition to a number of related free software projects, most notably Commons In A Box. Development on these projects is carried out by a growing team of employees and contract developers. The Lead Developer is responsible for managing the development teams for the Commons and the Commons In A Box projects, including: a. Working with project leadership and the Project Manager to determine project scope, and translating scope into concrete, prioritized development tasks and schedules of deliverables b. Delegating tasks to appropriate team members c. Overseeing individual developer progress, and reporting progress to project leadership d. Triaging incoming issue reports e. Maintaining and honing team workflows, including: version control strategy; release schedules; deployment techniques; automated unit and acceptance testing; ticket/bug workflows f. Assisting project leadership in searching for new development talent, and assessing applicants g. Training new developers, where necessary, in best practices for WordPress and BuddyPress development, as well as Commons-specific workflows h. Overseeing the production of all necessary documentation related to the foregoing items 2. Software development and architecture The CUNY Academic Commons network of websites is built on the WordPress Multisite and BuddyPress platforms. Commons In A Box, and the other software projects under the Commons umbrella, generally take the form of WordPress and BuddyPress plugins, made available publicly under terms of the GNU General Public License. The Lead Developer is responsible for overseeing maintenance and leading the ongoing development of the Commons network and the Commonss existing software projects, as well as spearheading future feature sets and software projects.
