In this role, you will assist with the continued build-up and operationalization of an enterprise class Big Data environment, including various components within the Hadoop stack. (Note: The company started with the Hortonworks distribution and is now planning an upgrade/migration to a later version of Cloudera). The primary focus of this role will be on core Hadoop administration. The ideal candidate has substantial hands-on experience working with the technologies encompassed within the Hadoop stack while also having knowledge and capabilities as a developer. You will coordinate, design, build, and integrate complex application technology solutions, aligned to architectural standards and definitions, and ensure IT services are delivered effectively and efficiently. You will help evaluate and decide the applicability of Hadoop technologies for newly proposed applications/solutions. You will architect, evolve, and buildout our Hadoop ecosystem, develop right-sized server specifications, install and configure software, implement appropriate monitoring and alerting, troubleshoot issues. You will be our Hadoop guru. You will do everything necessary to keep our Hadoop platform highly optimized and available. You will form a true partnership with our internal customers (marketing data science, IT enterprise business intelligence/analytics, and other application development teams) with a customer-service oriented mindset. You understand the application development life cycle and challenges faced by application developers, and you can thereby relate well with them. Ideally, but not required, you will have worked on the application development side, but are now focused squarely on the administration side. You will be part of a team, consisting mostly of traditional Microsoft SQL Server DBAs and other systems administrators (primarily of business intelligence tools). With your experience and understanding of both SQL and NoSQL/Hadoop platforms, you will be able to relate well to others on the team and help team members to cross the bridge from SQL relational to the NoSQL/Hadoop platforms. You will readily share your knowledge, develop training materials and conduct training sessions, in both group and one-on-one settings. You will be a real team player and help the entire team to learn Hadoop. You may direct the work of other less experienced Hadoop administrators. You will be able to easily, clearly articulate the benefits of Hadoop and provide comparisons/contrasts with other database technologies (especially SQL relational, NoSQL MongoDB). You will distill complex, technical concepts into plain, simple English that is easily understood by laymen (business, managers, etc.).
