This small team will gather various data sets, program a website, analyze data trends, and perform health education under a new five-year cooperative agreement with the federal National Center for Environmental Healths (NCEH) Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) program. With a new cooperative agreement comes responsibility to meet grant requirements and outcomes with the opportunity to craft a career position. These employees will analyze health, environmental, and demographic data to protect public health. As a member of our TDH EEP team, these employees will work independently and cooperatively from our central office in downtown Nashville. The employees will partner with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other federal, state, and local agencies. Key responsibilities: Related to environmental health tracking, these new employees will: •Build TNs Environmental Public Health Tracking capacity •Program a new online health data portal •Gather health data sets such as asthma, COPD, heart disease,diabetes, and other chronic conditions •Gather environmental data sets such as ground level ozone,particulate matter, water quality, hazardous sites, and more •Gather various demographic data sets from the U.S. Census population counts and the Social Vulnerability Index •Identify partners who can contribute more types of data •Create online data visualizations and dashboards •Select data indicators to share with local government planners and non-profit advocacy groups to support their projects •Draft data privacy and suppression rules and generate metadata files •Work with epidemiologists, scientists, statisticians, and information technology professionals on continuous improvement •Analyze health and environmental data to find opportunities to highlight and improve health equity Related to public health education, these new employees will: • Promote EPHT through email newsletters, social media, and conference exhibits • Prepare presentations, fact sheets, white papers, and other educational materials to help the public understand the connection between health and environmental data • Interact with people to understand and respond to their health concerns • Contribute data analyses and trends to the Tennessee Asthma Coalition membership • Respond to public questions about home and community environmental hazards by connecting our Healthy Homes and Healthy Places topics with EPHT topics Related to environmental public health, these new employees will: • Network with federal and state Health Tracking partners • Promote the availability of the health data portal among all types of health professionals • Interact with people and communities to help them understand trends in health data, environmental data, and demographic data • Contribute data analysis and trends for TDH annual reports and special projects • Create infographics to visually explain data, concepts, and trends • Crosstrain with other TDH EEP team members to be ready to assist with health risk assessment for environmental sites or public health emergencies Other considerations: A well-matched candidate would have experience in environmental science, epidemiology, data analysis, statistics, health education, or similar work.
