Description : In 2018, Governor Doug Burgum announced a new logo and brand for the state – to unite North Dakota state agencies under an official representation of the states work. To reinforce this brand across all communications and interactions, state agencies identify within the North Dakota Be Legendary brand architecture. Commerce is seeking a vendor to expand the brand and its use with the development of an icon. The goal of adding an icon to the Be Legendary brand hierarchy is to expand brand use and recognition while allowing for increased sales and promotional efforts. By creating a new symbol, we seek to elevate pride and usage within the State. A 2022 national survey commissioned by Commerce showed that only 22% of respondents had any awareness or familiarity with North Dakota. The states low population, geographic location, and lack of major attractions and national marketing all contribute to the lack of knowledge about North Dakota. Commerce uses many tactics to showcase the states strengths and unique advantages. A new symbolic design could propel both internal pride and external awareness, which may p help retain youth, attract talent, and draw visitors. The selected vendor should take the existing North Dakota Be Legendary brand guidelines into consideration while designing an icon. Design must be appropriate for promotional uses such as clothing and merchandising, and reflect the five principles of design: simple, memorable, timeless, versatile, and appropriate. The selected vendor is responsible for researching similar state icons, their uses and usability across mixed media types, and symbols or graphics that are representative of North Dakota and favored by residents.
