Production support, performance and tuning reviews, query monitoring, and other general DBA functions. Perform backup and recovery of databases as needed. Participate in production on-call support rotation. Proactively monitor and troubleshoot performance, availability, and scalability/capacity issues. Korn shell scripting for database automation. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Establish policies and procedures relating to database management, security, maintenance, and utilization. Provide technical database related assistance and information to applications programmers. Collaborate with development, production support, and ancillary departments in meeting deliverables from both a quality and schedule perspective. Provide support for development, test, and production environments including setup of new servers, databases, and objects within the database. Troubleshooting and implementing appropriate changes to the physical database (indexes, database and server configurations, etc) as needed for optimal performance. Install and maintain all DB2 database objects, including stored procedures, triggers, keys and indexes. Configuration and packaging of DB2 database for installation at client sites, development, and QA environment. COMMUNICATION AND INTERFACE Interacts with customers and Development through escalation as needed to resolve software issues in the field. Communicates progress and conceptual ideas orally and in writing. Develops and generates formal and informal written reports. Documents work so that instructions and descriptions can be understood and used. SUPERVISION Receives assignments as goals, usually with instructions that are open for interpretation. Determines methods of accomplishing assignment goals. Makes decisions within assigned areas of responsibility. PROBLEM SOLVING AND JUDGMENT Works on assignments that range from moderately to fairly complex in nature and involve variables which may or may not relate to one another. While working within framework of established procedures and processes, continually evaluates decisions and methods for effectiveness. Recommends changes as appropriate. Ensures that modifications and deviations from standard are properly approved before implementation. Erroneous decisions may have serious negative impact on design schedule, cost or customer satisfaction. REQUIREMENTS *Bachelors degree in computer science or equivalent education in a related discipline. Related work experience can be substituted for educational requirement. *7+ years DBA, programming, analyst, DBMS or related experience is required. *Knowledge of AIX, Korn Shell, and DB2 is required. *Windows operating systems and Perl scripting desirable. *Knowledge of programming languages such as C/C++, C# is desirable. *Knowledge of DB2 toolsets, SQL coding, and MS SQL Server. *Understanding of database access and ability to provide appropriate suggestions to developers in their implementation of SQL or other data access code. *Experience with database design and data modeling tools such as Erwin or Visio desirable. PHYSICAL CONDITIONS Has ability to communicate clearly, often through spoken means. Uses vision to view screens and create, review and modify work. Uses keyboard effectively.
