The instructional designer works with a subject matter expert to create courses that are instructionally sound, use instructional media effectively, and adhere to Capellas instructional design and editorial standards. The instructional designer works with teams which may include project managers, faculty, a curriculum specialist, interactive designer(s), and an assessment specialist to develop multiple courses in a limited timeframe. Responsibilities Work with faculty to revise or create curriculum requirements for existing courses, and design and develop high-quality online courses based on defined curriculum requirements. Ensure courses are suited to the adult online learner and meet Capellas standards for presentation and instructional design. Create strong alignment between the course competencies, assessments, and learning activities to increase learner efficiency in mastering competencies. Understand, articulate, and use good judgment in applying course development processes, tools, and standards. Prioritize and manage course development activities and deliverables for multiple courses and subject matter experts to ensure on-time delivery of course content. Work with faculty to create appropriate content and select and obtain subject matter materials for intended learning outcomes, following appropriate legal, ethical, and procedural guidelines and practices. Apply adult and online learning principles to the design of online courses and instructional media to effectively engage learners. Advocate for learners and faculty in the design of online learning activities, instructions, and presentation. Design and integrate instructional media into online courses to maximize the effectiveness of the online learning experience by increasing interaction, motivation, instruction, and practice opportunities in an online environment. Essential Skills Working knowledge of or experience applying instructional design, adult learning, or online learning theories to the design, development, or delivery of instruction. Proven ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing. Strong organization and management skills to proactively manage and prioritize the course development activities for multiple courses with firm deadlines. Advanced critical thinking skills in a fast-paced, changing environment. Ability to establish effective, professional relationships in a collaborative virtual working environment. Proficiency with MS Word and Excel. Aptitude for learning new software applications such as Cisco Webex, SharePoint, and Blackboard.
