Job Description Architect: SQL Tuning, OLTP, Data Warehouse, SQL Server Data Modeling

Monsanto is passionate about using science and technology to improve agriculture. Monsanto scientists are conducting research and development (R&D) to revolutionize plant breeding and biotechnology. The Technology Pipeline Solutions (TPS) team within IT works directly with the Monsanto scientists to develop IT solution platforms that enable these research and development efforts. The accepted candidate will join the emerging field of IT systems leveraging their database expertise to play a key role in defining and delivering breakthrough science in high throughput R&D platforms for Monsanto.

The successful candidate will work with the TPS Team within Monsanto to develop and maintain enterprise-level data solutions. The candidate will work as part of a team comprised of data analysts, data architect and other members of the technical staff to develop database systems to support data collection , analysis and exposure efforts for a research domain. The candidate will develop and maintain logical and physical data models and participate in functional requirements and design sessions, develop DDL and DML scripts for Oracle and SQL server databases.

Specific responsibilities will include:
Work with Workflow Engineers, Data Analysts and Subject Matter Experts to understand the data domain.
Analyzes designs, creates and implements complex data models, canonical, logical and physical databases including access methods, device allocations, validation checks, organization and security.
Prepares design, specifications, estimated costs and construction time of the data requirements.
Investigate source systems to locate and understand existing data domains across TPS.
Adhere to data architecture standards and strategies for designing solutions.
Communicate data requirements to the development team and other stakeholders.
Liaisons with database software vendors and external technical support on issues such as software upgrades, problems and potential solutions.
Create documents and coordinate script deployment with Data Operations and Enterprise DBA team.
Coordinate and ensure appropriate reviews per processes defined in Research IT.
Assist in developing data migration strategies.
Required Skills:

BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
The candidate must possess the following technical experience:
3-5 years of full time experience as Data Modeler.
Understanding of database design techniques for OLTP, data warehouse, and data mart design. Experience in data modeling and data architecture principles and patterns.
Experience with SQL, SQL tuning, and Oracle data extraction and modification.
Experience in using tools such as Erwin, Power Designer, or Qdesigner.
Experience with Polyglot Persistence and noSQL stores is a plus.
Ability to communicate across diverse audience of business analysts, architects, business users and technical project staff.
Strong organization and interpersonal skills. Ability to deal with and balance multiple priorities. Ability to deal with ambiguity and rapid change. Demonstrated interaction skills across a wide spectrum of technical contacts and teams.
Passion for the integrity of database design and a willingness to compromise appropriately to balance design and delivery.
Hands-on role requiring rigorous attention to detail and thorough application of standards.
Have demonstrable understanding and awareness of technology and an ability to learn and acquire new technologies as needed.
Desired Skills:
Bioinformatics experience in the medical or other life sciences industry.
Familiarity with NoSQL and Big Data environment.
Knowledge of SQL Server is an added advantage.
Large development project experience.
Ability to work as a member of a diverse team to achieve a common goal.
