The Bureau administers a large number of state programs, each with their own data management needs. Several of these programs manage state investments of over $50 million dollars annually in grants, payments and tax credits. Despite the complementary goals and similar data needs of many Bureau programs, the existing systems to manage program data are separate from each other. Additionally, these data systems are primarily developed and maintained by Bureau program staff and generally limited to Microsoft products, such as Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, and SharePoint sites. Spatial data related to our programs is incomplete and what does exist is disconnected from other data. All of the data management systems have functional limitations due to software updates, changing data needs and program growth. The Bureau has an immediate need for an improved system to manage data from Bureau programs with particular emphasis on our Soil and Watershed Management program (SWRM) and connected Bureau land management programs (PL) grant programs.
