Working on other builds for RHEL: Our Windows team resource that has been helping with virtual builds has not been trained in physical builds, but could learn the process 5. Re-wrote part of ISO build tool and have modified to accelerate builds and still working to refine 6. Participation in Linux architectural review process flows with others, approx. 2 hours weekly, discussing the current build process in excruciating detail 7. Participation in network Segmentation project. Not clear yet, but my role will be to perform actual IP change work, (have plans to mod existing tools to do this work) 8. Antivirus for RHEL complete, anticipate tasks to write new Puppet code to remove ClamAV, and install new product (either learn Puppet or already know it). 9. Bash and Python tools to manipulate data for ad-hoc reports of various types (Stored in Git) 10. Working on tool to automagically configure additional storage after Cloudbolt build. Right now this is a manual post build process that sort of intimidates new trainees (40% done) 11. Working on tool to automagically discover RHEL5 storage, and compare to standard config, and report the divergence for new upgrade servers (75% done) Most of the work Ive done has been centered on builds, Puppetizing things, or making tools to speed things up like server builds. Ive created a step by step document which anyone can use to perform builds which simplifies the process by stacking commands together. I would have thought you could get a less senior engineer and train them on the WSGC way of performing builds, which is in its own class. There has been relatively little opportunity to do things in Puppet and we are aware that other parts of the org are using Ansible so Puppet may not be the most important skill going forward The three most important skills Ive felt the need for in the time Ive been here are Python, Bash, and Linux administration. We dont have any standard containers for config data, it comes from different sources, so I consider the ability to use that language really important. The person should also understand the Java/Tomcat and Oracle stacks and have the ability to perform general network troubleshooting. The DBAs are not super familiar with some of the OS specific tasks like creating durable raw disks or building/troubleshooting Oracle clusters so we have to help with that. Most the non-build tickets Ive been involved in begin life as vague issues so experience has been helpful in distinguishing superfluous information from key information. Probably the most important skills in my opinion are the right attitude, mental flexibility, and initiative. Almost everything here happens under the umbrella of urgency so this person should be able to compartmentalize and deal with competing projects. We have lots of slow, manual tasks and not much in the way of tools to make difficult, complicated things easy so anyone can accomplish them quickly and precisely.
